Balloon ascent goes awry over Boston.
July 4, 1861
Strong winds drive the Queen of the Air hot air balloon over East Boston and Nahant, forcing the two men aboard, pilot Seth Simmons and Boston Herald photographer E.B. Haskett, to set it down in the ocean. After being dragged for several miles, the two men are rescued by crewmen aboard the schooner Atlantic.
